It happens every year. You spend twenty minutes stuffing a basket with chocolate eggs and jelly beans, your kid tears through it in four minutes flat, and by 9am everyone is on a sugar high with nowhere to go. Sound familiar?

I've done Easter differently for the past few years, and honestly? My kids are more excited about their baskets now than they ever were when it was 80% candy. The secret is filling them with things that are actually fun — things they'll use for weeks, not just eat before breakfast.

What to Put in an Easter Basket Instead of Candy

Before we get into the specific items, here's my general rule: one experience item, one creative item, one outdoor item, and a small treat. That formula works for almost any age and keeps the basket feeling special without turning it into a toy haul.

Easter Basket Ideas for Toddlers (Ages 1–3)

Toddlers don't need much — and honestly they're just as excited about the basket itself as what's inside. Keep it simple.

Bubbles This is the single best Easter basket item for toddlers. Full stop. A multipack of bubbles will get used every single day for months. They're cheap, they're magical, and they get kids outside.

Bath Crayons If your toddler loves bath time (or hates it), bath crayons are a game changer. They draw on the tub walls and wash off completely. We've had ours for two years.

Easter Basket Ideas for Kids Ages 4–7

This is the sweet spot age for Easter baskets. They're old enough to appreciate something special but still young enough to think the Easter Bunny is the coolest thing ever.

A Small Puzzle A new puzzle tucked into the basket is something they'll actually sit down and do on Easter afternoon. Pick one that's slightly challenging — not too easy, not frustrating.

Easter Basket Ideas for Kids Ages 8–12

Older kids are trickier because they've outgrown a lot of the "Easter-y" stuff but they're not teenagers yet. The key is leaning into their interests.

A Book They've Been Wanting This one sounds boring but stay with me. A book your kid has actually been asking about, wrapped up in the basket, feels intentional and special. It says I know what you love. Way more meaningful than a Reese's egg.

The "One Small Treat" Rule

I'm not anti-candy — I just don't want it to be the whole basket. Our rule is one small treat per kid. For us that's usually:

• A chocolate bunny (the classic)

• Their favorite candy bar

• A small bag of jelly beans

That's it. One treat. It keeps the sugar reasonable and makes the actual fun stuff the star of the basket.

Easter Basket Presentation Tips

A few things that make the basket feel extra special without any extra money:

• Use tissue paper instead of plastic grass — it looks nicer, it's easier to clean up, and it doesn't get stuck in the vacuum for the next three months

• Let them find it — hide the basket somewhere in the house instead of leaving it out. The hunt is half the fun.

• Skip the giant basket — a smaller, tighter basket actually looks more special than a huge one with stuff floating around in it

• Add a handwritten note from the Easter Bunny — takes 2 minutes, they save it forever
